We are working on eating more raw veggies. This will benefit us in so many ways...less heat in the kitchen, less time to prepare dinner, less dishes to wash and, did you know...raw veggies generally contain more live enzymes and vitamins than cooked veggie have.
We started this tonight with cucumbers. Our main dish was loaded nachos (corn chips, cheese, chili peppers, tomatoes, olives and shredded chicken). The kids LOVED it (and so did me and Glen). Joseph ate his cukes up and Esther, well, she did not. Her plate sat and sat and sat. Finally, we had an idea...kids like to sometimes to do things that are forbidden to them, so...
...we forbade Esther to eat her veggies. That's right! And it worked like a charm. Glen and I kept telling her not to eat her cucumbers, while Joseph cheered for her to do. Then Glen and I told her not to listen to Joseph. So, what did she do? She listened to Joseph and ate all of her cucumbers...with a big grin on her face. She got more nachos.
Listen to the video as Joseph reveals why Esther should not eat vegetables (hint: he says that veggies make people stronger and if Esther gets too strong, he and Glen won't be able to handle her). Yes, Esther is strong and has a lot of energy...those darn vegetables! ;)
Sometimes I wonder if we just change the name of the veggie they'd be more appealing, too. We named broccoli "trees". The other day at a friend's party, there was a veggie tray. Tim came to me and asked for a tree. It took three times requesting for me to understand he wanted permission to eat some broccoli. Go right ahead!
ReplyDeleteOn another note, did you check out Bountiful Baskets from my post last week? I'm sure they are available near you. I got 58#s for $16.50 this week. About 1/2 of it is for volunteering an hour before pick-up to sort all the fruits and veggies into baskets to be picked up. That would help with the veggie intake, too. Maggie and Ami helped, thus we got 3 extra pieces each round. It's awesome!
That's awesome about the broccoli trees! Thanks! :) When I get my other blog up and going, I'll give you the URL. It's one of my business blogs, but it'll be about natural parenting stuff and include my favorite thing...food. ;)
ReplyDeleteI read your post about Bountiful Baskets. I loved the pictures you posted! We're on board to start soon.
We started making green smoothies to help with eating more veggies. I have a combination of veggies that I put in with a combination of fruits. I use yogurt, kefir, fruit juice, or coconut water as the liquid. Of course, the Vita Mix does its job well...:) We make a batch each day and it's very energizing. I'll post recipes of this on my other blog soon, too! I've been coming up with a bunch of them.
Veggies are so good to eat...:)
That was so cute!
